Woodcroft College has many opportunities for expression of creativity and development of passions and interests through participation in music and drama, as part of the curriculum complemented by many extra-curricular opportunities.

Music Program

Music at Woodcroft embraces creativity to inspire passion, achievement and personal growth. Our program is highly regarded, encompassing curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for students. Our specialist music teachers share their passion for music and performance across the College from ELC to Year 12.

In our curricular music program, our key learning areas include Creating, Musicianship, Music Styles, Performance and Industry skills. Students studying Music in Year 9 to Year 12 undertake individual tuition on their instrument to develop their technique and performance skills as part of their music journey. Students studying voice, or a woodwind, brass or string instrument are provided with free weekly lessons with an accompanist to support them in their performance skills.

Learning an instrument and performing music with others enhances students’ academic, emotional and social growth and above all else, it is fun. Woodcroft College offers a wide of instrumental lessons on strings, woodwind, brass rhythm section, piano and voice from over 20 talented instrumental staff and accompanists.

Instrumental tuition at the College is offered from Year 3 and can be continued up to Year 12. Younger students can apply for special permission to undertake instrumental lessons earlier. At Year 5 all students participate in our Band program, receiving free small group tuition lessons over three terms.

Our extra-curricular Music Program brings students of all year levels together in a range of bands and ensembles. Students develop their confidence through a variety of performance opportunities at school and off campus.

At Woodcroft students can join the Junior Wind Ensemble, Woodcroft Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Senior Funk Ensemble, Vocal Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, and the Woodcroft College Concert Band. Band members provide live music at the biennial Junior School Musical and the annual College Musical production.

Middle and Senior School students involved in the Concert Band have the opportunity to travel and perform overseas every second year.

Music Concerts

Showcase is one of the highlights of the year for our Performing Arts program. With bands, soloists and ensembles entertaining sell-out crowds each year. The Woodcroft College Concert Band present a special finale to entertain the audience in this special night for Music students and their families.

Smaller music concerts are held throughout the year to give our smaller bands and ensembles a chance to showcase their talent to parents. Concerts include Junior School Recital Nights, a Junior School Wind Ensemble and Woodcroft Wind Ensemble Performance and a Sounds of Music concert.

Annual Music Productions

The College Musical is another highlight on our Performing Arts calendar. Performing to capacity audiences, our students leave everyone in awe, performing musical productions that have played on stages around the world.

Middle and Senior School students can audition for lead, support, our specialist core dance group or ensemble roles. From Term 1, cast members will be involved in after school rehearsals for vocals, music and choreography before the live performances in Term 3.

There are also opportunities for behind-the-scenes involvement through costume team and crew. Our strong Music Program ensures that that the Musical always has a live band giving our Music students another performance opportunity.

Our Junior School students do not miss out as they have a smaller musical production giving audition and performance experiences. Their production is held every two years.

Drama

Drama gives our students an opportunity to be immersed in the dramatic process and the responsibilities and skills required to adopt a theatrical role – as a creative designer or performer.

Students will explore and experience a range of dramatic skills from acting, set design, directing, lighting and sound along with the different styles from musical and physical theatre to dramatic plays. Students will have the opportunity to attend live theatrical productions and experience workshops run by industry experts.

Each year our Senior School drama students stage performances in front of their family and friends.

Our Drama Club is a student-led community with a passion for performing arts. With the Drama Captain taking the lead, students develop their skills, ending the year with a performance that is completely student-designed.
