Our Middle School provides an environment where your child will be challenged to achieve their best within a safe, caring and inclusive community.
We pride ourselves on an all-round education which not only provides academic rigour, but also nurtures the skills our young people need for emotional and social success. Through our outstanding Pastoral Care programs and experienced tutors, we take great delight in watching your child’s progress as they develop the passions and qualities they will need in Senior School and beyond.
One of the strengths of Middle School is the exposure our students have to a wide variety of subjects and extra-curricular activities. We understand the importance of your child experiencing a broad curriculum so they can pursue their interests as they head towards Senior School pathways. We also recognise the benefits of contributing to the College community through involvement in clubs and activities such as sport, music, camps, art, drama and innovative technology.
You will find approachable staff and receive regular feedback on your child’s progress. Our teachers are specialists in their subject areas and the majority teach in Middle and Senior School, so they know what learning is needed for students to be successful.
You can read more about your child’s learning and experiences throughout each year of Middle School. We are here to encourage each student to discover, explore and engage with their learning.
Year 7 is the beginning of a three-year journey through Middle School. In Year 7 students are introduced to a high school model for education. They have specialist subject teachers while building strong connections with their Tutor Group Teacher. Students are welcomed into a community where their wellbeing is of the utmost importance, and they are supported to develop good routines and habits which will serve them well in their future learning.
Year 7 is the foundation of Middle School. Through the Arts and Technology rotations, students experience all subjects offered in the Middle School. This allows students to discover their passions and prepare to start specialising with a choice of electives in Year 8 and Year 9.
Further learning and growth opportunities occur outside the classroom through leadership responsibilities, a broad range of extra-curricular clubs and activities, an extensive sports program, performing art opportunities and the Outdoor Education Program.
In Year 7, students will engage in key learning areas.
The College employs specialist staff to support teachers to deliver the curriculum to students with diverse learning needs in an inclusive environment. Your child will have access to support for literacy, numeracy and social skills development if needed. We also value the experience our older students provide with there being several opportunities for our Year 7 students to be mentored by our Senior School students.
A core component of our structured Pastoral Care program is the participation of our Year 7 cohort in the Healthy Minds School Program.
This eight-week preventative mental health program unlocks the formula for good mental health and well-being led by psychologist, Dr Tom Nehmy.
In addition to the weekly session students continue to explore the themes in greater detail in their individual Health and Personal Development lessons. Students learn helpful thinking skills as they navigate their way through adolescence.
Parents are also invited to attend a session with Dr Nehmy as well as receive a weekly module to use as a discussion point at home.
As part of the Outdoor Education Program Year 7 students take part in a three-day camp at the Murraylands Aquatic Centre, participating in activities including sailing, stand-up Paddleboarding skiing, knee-boarding and kayaking.
The aim of the camp is personal development of students, focusing on self-esteem and confidence. The camp builds interpersonal bonds between students and staff and is our students’ introduction to camping and aquatic activities in preparation for their ongoing involvement in the Outdoor Education Program in Middle and Senior School.
In Year 8 students continue to build on the foundations established in Year 7, while making choices in their elective subjects. While students may choose their electives, they will study at least one subject from the ‘Arts’ and ‘Technology’ areas ensuring they get to experience a wide range of subjects. This allows students to experience the process of choosing subjects in preparation for later years where they will be able to curate an individualised learning journey.
Along with structured learning, Year 8 provides students with a broad range of opportunities to develop important connections, build confidence and take responsibility for their actions.
Students will be challenged to step outside of their comfort zone, to develop their teamwork skills, and to build their resilience and perseverance capabilities.
Further learning and growth opportunities occur outside the classroom through leadership responsibilities, a broad range of extra-curricular clubs and activities, an extensive sports program, performing art opportunities and the Outdoor Education Program.
In Year 8, students will engage in learning across core subjects and electives.

Year 8 students take part in the Resilience Project.
This program provides evidence-based, practical strategies to support positive mental health and build resilience. Students and teachers will participate in weekly lessons and activities around three key principals, Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). Presentations will include stories and research on how students can build mental health in their day to day lives.

Year 8 students visit Middleton Caravan Park on the Fleurieu Peninsula for a five-day camp. The focus of the camp is outdoor living, personal development and problem-solving. Students will participate in initiative games designed to encourage teamwork, engaging discussion and critical thinking along with activities including surfing, kayaking, abseiling and bike riding.
The important final year of Middle School will see students being prepared for the challenges and opportunities of Senior School.
The curriculum, extra-curricular activities and outdoor education program work together to build self-esteem, leadership and life skills, and the development of both character and intellect.
Students are encouraged to set goals and grow in independence. Within a safe environment, students will be encouraged to take risks and respond to challenges with growing self-confidence and resilience.
The focus is continuing to build students’ ability to persevere both academically and socially. The sense of belonging and community will be strengthened through nurturing positive relationships and growing social responsibility.
